DCPA Emergency Order
On August 6, 2024, the EPA issued an Emergency Order suspending the use of dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA). This marks the first time in nearly 40 years that the EPA has taken such emergency action to immediately remove a product from the market.
Dacthal, the brand name for the herbicide DCPA, is manufactured by AMVAC Chemical Corporation. It is used to control weeds in various agricultural settings, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants.
Injuries or health issues related to DCPA exposure can occur due to improper handling, application, or accidental ingestion. Exposed fetuses can suffer from low birth weight, impaired brain development, decreased I.Q., and impaired motor skills later in life. Pregnant women who may be unaware of their exposure could give birth to babies experiencing irreversible and lifelong health problems.
